North Carolina ranked with Texas, Florida and Georgia as having the best business climates among the 50 states, according to a new survey of U.S. corporate executives released today at the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Annual Conference. When assessing the best states for business, corporate executives frequently cited tax climate, “pro-business environment,” incentives/financial assistance and workforce quality/availability among the top.

GE Aviation, a global leader in jet engine and aircraft system production, hosted a grand opening ceremony on October 15 at the site of its new advanced composites factory near Asheville. The new 170,000-square-foot facility will be the first in the world to mass produce engine components made of advanced ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials. Within five years, the workforce at the plant is expected to grow to more than 340 people.

Highland Brewing Company announced expansion plans today to add 15 jobs and invest $5 million in new equipment and facilities over the next three years. The expansion, which includes tanks and a new bottling line, will increase its brewing capacity to over 60,000 barrels, or 828,000 cases, and enable the company to expand their distribution over time.

The 15th Annual Asheville Metro Economy Outlook announced it will feature Greg Ip, renowned economics expert at The Economist and a Pulitzer Prize winner. Mr. Ip will present an insightful analysis of the latest national economic indicators and their impact on the regional economy at 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2014, at The Omni Grove Park Inn. Chris Cavanaugh, president of Magellan Strategy Group, will highlight trends in the Asheville Metro economy.

Wicked Weed Brewing announced today expansion plans for a new brewing facility to be located in western Buncombe County. The company’s expansion will add 82 new jobs and will invest $5 million in facilities and equipment over the next three years.

The Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce and Venture Asheville honored Justin Belleme as Entrepreneur of the Year at the Chamber's annual meeting on June 26. Justin Belleme founded JB Media Group, LLC, a full service online marketing agency, in 2011 and has grown the company to 10 marketing professionals. Last summer, he launched the JB Media Institute, a six-week, in-person training program for online marketing, which has graduated 40 alumni.

Transportation Safety Apparel, a Hilton Head, S.C. based company, announced they will bring 25 jobs to Buncombe County. The multimillion-dollar safety apparel company is opening a 10,000 square foot distribution center in Weaverville in June 2014 and plans to gradually consolidate its operations there by 2017.

BorgWarner, a global technology leader and top automotive industry supplier, announced today a plan to expand its Turbo Systems manufacturing facility in Arden, N.C. The expansion will create 154 new good-paying engineering and manufacturing jobs in Buncombe County and will invest $55 million in facilities and equipment over the next five years.
