Description:
A campus of the University of North Carolina system, Western Carolina University has offered a wide variety of academic programs in Asheville since 1937 at various sites throughout Buncombe County, including at the University of North Carolina at Asheville and the Enka campus of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. Space and access constraints at those sites in recent years limited the university’s ability to meet the educational needs of the people of the greater Asheville area. Beginning with the 2012 fall semester, Western Carolina consolidated its Asheville-area programs to a new instructional site at Biltmore Park Town Square. The roughly 25,000 square feet of space at Biltmore Park, an upscale mixed-use community located at Exit 37 of Interstate 26 between Asheville and Hendersonville, contains 12 classrooms of various sizes, a multipurpose room and a conference room, all equipped with computers, projectors, blue-ray players, document cameras and movable classroom furniture. The site is home to WCU undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing, and features state-of-the-art simulation laboratories that mimic what graduates will encounter in real health care settings once they graduate. A total of 22 programs currently are offered through WCU Programs at Biltmore Park, which serves more than 500 students. At Biltmore Park, Western Carolina offers graduate programs from the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Allied Professions, and Health and Human Sciences, and an undergraduate program in nursing. Additional WCU programs may be added at Biltmore Park in the future, but will not duplicate programs already offered in the area by UNC Asheville or any other UNC system institution.
