The Rise of Advanced Manufacturing

The most successful industry within AVL 5x5 has been advanced manufacturing, which announced 1,850 new jobs in Buncombe County over the past 5 years. World-class manufacturers located here develop turbo chargers for Indy 500 cars, precision cutting tools to make Apple iPhone components, solar integrated electric car charging stations and even components designed and made for NASA’s Voyager I.

The region’s talented workforce and aptitude for metals machining in automotive manufacturing and aviation manufacturing industries led Canada-based Linamar to invest $315 million in Buncombe County, ramping up to 800 employees by 2020. Asheville grown AvL Technologies, whose mobile satellite antennas comprise 85 percent of the TV broadcast market, announced plans in 2015 to increase its workforce by over 50 percent.

Increasingly recognized as a leader in the southeast, Asheville’s manufacturing employment, including automotive manufacturing and aviation manufacturing, grew at 7.3% for five years, ahead of North Carolina’s 5% and outpacing the growth of U.S. manufacturing jobs.

“Asheville has all the tools that support long-term growth, community leaders supportive of advanced technology, an innovative workforce, and best of all a location that attracts talent,” said Michael Meguiar, plant manager at GE Aviation, a division of the Fortune 10 company.
