A New Era of Menstrual Care with Period Nirvana

July 2, 2025

In a bright corner of West Asheville’s Beacham’s Curve, a small shop is making a big difference. Period Nirvana is not your average retail store – it’s a welcoming, stigma-busting space where people of all genders and ages can explore sustainable menstrual care with curiosity and confidence. Founded by period product expert Kim Rosas, the store offers a curated selection of menstrual cups, discs, reusable pads, period underwear, and even safe disposables, plus Asheville’s only build-your-own first period kit and the one-of-a-kind Menstrual Museum.

Originally launched online in 2020 and opened as a brick-and-mortar in 2025, Period Nirvana blends education with empowerment, offering expert guidance and inclusive products for everyone – no shame, no confusion, just support. With a mission rooted in breaking taboos and creating access, Kim and her team are turning a once-taboo topic into a proud and confident conversation.

How did you come up with your idea or concept for your business? How did you decide on a name?

After switching to a menstrual cup in 2012, I started sharing my experience online. At the time, interest in reusable period care was growing, but there was no curated marketplace that brought trusted brands together. I often used the phrase “Period Nirvana” in my videos and workshops to describe the feeling of finding the right product – so when it came time to name the store, it just made sense.

What makes your business unique in its field?

Period Nirvana was the first online store in the U.S. dedicated entirely to reusable menstrual care. Our Asheville location is now home to the first and only dedicated museum exhibit exploring the history of menstrual products, and we’re only the second physical period store in the country. It’s a space built on both education and empathy.

How many employees do you have? And what qualities do you look for when hiring?

We’re a small but mighty team – two employees plus myself at the Asheville location. When hiring, it’s essential that team members align with our values and feel comfortable discussing sensitive topics openly and kindly with customers.

Where do you see your business in the next year? The next five?

In the next year, I hope to normalize the idea of period stores – because why is it considered “weird” to have dedicated spaces for something so common? Over the next five years, I’d love to see more stores like ours opening across the country and continuing to shift the conversation around menstrual health.

Why did you decide to join the Chamber?

To connect with other business owners and integrate Period Nirvana into the Asheville community in a deeper way.

What is your favorite part about doing business in the Asheville area?

The people. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and supportive – it’s been such a positive experience launching the store here.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your business?

Yes! We’re hosting our (slightly delayed) Grand Opening celebration on August 1 at our store. We’d love for the community to stop by, explore our products, and see the Menstrual Museum in person.
