Behind the Lens with Black Mask Media

December 10, 2025

Black Mask Media has built its reputation on capturing the moments people want to remember and the stories businesses need to tell. Officially established as an LLC in 2017, Black Mask Media traces its roots back to 2007 in New York City, where founder and lead videographer Orville Roachford, Jr. started out doing graphic design and promotional visuals for local events. Over the years, the company has evolved into a multimedia brand built on creativity, authenticity and helping clients tell their stories in visually powerful ways.

Orville designed a logo for the Chamber’s Black Business Alliance, an initiative with programming kicking off January 22, 2026 dedicated to empowering Black entrepreneurs and business owners through advocacy, training and connections.

Read on to learn how the Black Mask Media’s concept took shape, the lessons learned along the way, and what inspires their work in the Asheville community.

Tell us about your company.

Black Mask Media is a full-service creative production company that specializes in wedding videography, photography and branded storytelling for businesses and events.

Our mission is to capture moments and messages that matter — whether that’s the emotion of a wedding day, the energy of a live event, or the personality behind a growing brand. Now based in Asheville, North Carolina, we serve clients across the region with a focus on professional quality, personalized service and visual storytelling that connects.

As the founder and lead videographer, I oversee all creative direction, shooting and post-production. I also manage client relations, strategy and collaborations that help local businesses and individuals elevate their visual presence through film and photography.

How did you come up with your idea or concept for your business?

The concept for my business stems from my ability to remain unnoticed behind the scenes of any and all events while capturing the very important moments for clients to relive again and again. This is how I arrived at the name Black Mask Media. By staying incognito as much as possible, people can be their unapologetic selves.

What makes your business unique in its field?

We specialize in non traditional events or weddings which we believe is a common subject matter throughout WNC.

During your first year of business, what was the greatest lesson you learned?

Do not undervalue yourself.

Why did you decide to join the Chamber?

Several referrals from colleagues made it an easy choice to join the chamber – all from creators or business owners I admire.

What is your favorite part about doing business in the Asheville area?

I love the culture of Asheville it reminds me of the melting pot aspect in NYC. Because of the many different people that move here or are passing through. Also the huge amount of tourism the area invites on a regular basis makes for a thriving community.
