Awards:

  • Franchise Business Review honored Molly Gaffney-Keebler, Spherion Staffing & Recruiting owner in Asheville and Morristown, for her leadership and community impact. After Hurricane Helene, her team helped over 550 displaced workers return to jobs, while continuing long-term efforts like the RAMP scholarship at A-B Tech and partnerships with Girls Inc. of Hamblen County.
  • Asheville artist Matthew Decker won Wicked Weed’s inaugural “You Deserve An Upgrade” contest, receiving a $10,000 prize to rebuild his River Arts District studio destroyed by Hurricane Helene. Decker was praised for his volunteerism and community service during recovery.

Happenings:

  • Celebrate Healthy Aging Month on Friday, Sept. 5, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. at the Reuter Family YMCA in Biltmore Park. The free event includes exercise classes, pickleball, health screenings, lectures, vendor booths, and refreshments. Presented by Hopscotch Primary Care.
  • Nationally recognized drag performer and environmental activist Pattie Gonia will headline her “SAVE HER!” show at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium on Friday, Sept. 26 during Blue Ridge Pride Festival. Her visit supports the Always Asheville Fund for small businesses impacted by Hurricane Helene and includes a community hike celebrating regional recovery.
  • From Aug. 20–31, award-winning playwright Mike Wiley performs Tired Souls: King and the Montgomery Bus Boycott at the YMI Cultural Center. The one-man show sheds light on the activists who paved the way for Rosa Parks and includes a post-show Q&A. Tickets at NCStage.org.
