Achievement

  • UNC Asheville has secured the largest private donation in its history—$5 million—to support student success, the Gateway Scholars program, and Bulldog Athletics. The gift will remove financial barriers for high-potential students and invest in mentorship, career readiness, and athletics through the Janet R. Cone Endowment. The donation launches the public phase of the university’s Centennial Campaign. Read more.

  • Kudzu Brands has announced six finalists for its 2025 Brand Giveaway. The community is invited to vote daily through June 29 to help determine which WNC minority-owned business or nonprofit will receive a $15,000 branding package. Finalists include Americare Pharmacy, Chill Cereal Bar, Asheville GreenWorks, and more. Vote now.

  • Thanks to Bear’s Foundation and Linked4Life, food & beverage workers impacted by Hurricane Helene can access six free therapy sessions through All Souls Counseling Center.   • AdventHealth continues to grow its provider network with the addition of Scott Girard, DO, an experienced internist joining the South Asheville practice. Dr. Girard brings a holistic approach to internal medicine, with a focus on complex and geriatric care. Schedule appointments.

Development:

  • Mayor Esther Manheimer and the Water Resources Department have broken ground on Phase 2 of upgrades to the Mills River Water Treatment Plant. The $23.3 million project will improve resilience, double raw water storage, and lay the groundwork for future capacity expansion.   • The Buncombe County TDA approved expedited funding to restore the John B. Lewis Soccer Complex and improve parking at Bob Lewis Ballpark. The projects aim to support local recreation and revive tournament-driven tourism revenue lost due to Hurricane Helene. An additional $13.1 million in TPDF funds remains available for the fall 2025 cycle.
  • SanStone Health & Rehabilitation has welcomed Margate Health & Rehab Center in Jefferson, NC, into its network of skilled nursing and rehab centers. Happenings:

  • Buncombe County Parks & Recreation invites the community to its July 4th celebration at Lake Julian Park. The full-day event will feature food trucks, live music by The Fuzzy Peppers, and a firework show at 9:15 p.m. Free fishing and shuttle service from Estes Elementary will be available. Learn more.
  • The American Red Cross is partnering with WLOS and iHeart Radio for the 38th Annual Operation Blood Drive on June 26.
