Tell us about your business and the role you play in it.

I’m Melissa Markis, owner of Skin Spa Asheville, a woman-owned boutique spa founded in 2013. Our tranquil spa is located in the Haywood Park Hotel in downtown Asheville, and we’re known for creating luxurious, personalized spa experiences, especially through our spa parties, couples packages, and curated treatments using Eminence Organic Skincare.

We offer signature services like the Appalachian Couples Getaway and Blue Ridge Escape packages, as well as high-touch facials, massage therapy, and our own line of skincare and body care products. We also make booking easy with online scheduling, phone support, and complimentary valet parking for every guest.

Tell us about your company culture.

At Skin Spa Asheville, our culture is centered on care, personalization, and intention. Every guest is treated like a VIP from the moment they walk in. We empower our team to tailor each experience to the client – whether that’s signature massage techniques, customized facial treatments, or a “wow moment” like a surprise mimosa or a personalized welcome sign for a special occasion.

What is your company’s relationship with the community?

Though we welcome many visitors and tourists, we deeply value our local clientele. We support them through perks like monthly membership discounts and complimentary valet parking, making it easier and more affordable to enjoy self-care downtown.

What does hospitality mean to you? What experience do you strive to create?

To us, hospitality means personalization. We take note of client preferences, from scent choices and massage pressure to table heat levels, so we can greet them with a thoughtful “Welcome back” and a treatment that feels just right. Every detail matters, and our goal is for guests to start destressing the moment they enter our relaxation room.

What’s been your most innovative idea?

During the pandemic, we pivoted to create “celebrating at the spa” packages, and it’s become one of our most popular offerings. Whether it’s a bachelorette party, girls’ trip, or a multigenerational Mother’s Day celebration, we offer a space where people can gather, unwind, and celebrate together with care and comfort.

What do you enjoy most about working in your industry?

I love helping people feel great, confident, and calm. Being able to offer them peace and stress relief, even for just an hour, is incredibly rewarding. Seeing clients walk out with glowing skin and relaxed shoulders brings me so much joy.

What is your company vision, and how do you bring it to life daily?

Our vision is to help every guest who walks through our doors feel confident in their skin, relaxed in their body, and supported on their self-care journey. We live this every day by focusing on intention and personalization – from the services we offer to the way we listen and care for each guest.

What have you learned about customer service through your experiences?

One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned is that sometimes the best service is simply listening. People don’t always need answers – they need space, care, and the feeling that someone is truly present with them.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Though we’re located downtown and attract many visitors, we truly cherish our local community. We’re a small, heart-centered business, and we’re here to support you, whether it’s through a monthly facial, a last-minute massage, or helping you celebrate a special milestone with the people you love.
