Providing energy audits and offering solutions for water efficiency, Skyland Environmental empowers a variety of businesses to improve their utilities. From renewable energy integration to equipment upgrades and load management optimization, this team of energy experts can help your business find ways to save — and to become more environmentally friendly.

We talked to Co-Founder and President Sally Maher about the company’s philosophies, community values and belief in the city of Asheville.

What is your company’s mission? How has it grown?

Our mission is to empower commercial clients with complimentary analyses that uncover opportunities for improvement. By identifying and implementing targeted technologies and services, we help businesses achieve greater efficiency, lower operating utility costs and build a more sustainable future. We started out with water-efficiency technologies and have grown to also offer leak-detection, energy audits for power management solutions and iOT solutions as well.

What made you choose the Asheville area?

Asheville is keen on sustainability. With the high-pressure of mountain water and abundance of breweries, we see an opportunity for water stewardship. We enjoy helping local businesses save money while ensuring long-term water security for all. With what feels like a big city culture yet small town vibe, we have experienced a real sense of community here. Our goal is to give back to Asheville and its beloved businesses with every project we take on.

What is a little-known fact about your organization?

A portion of all of our sales is given to water.org, empowering more than 85 million people with access to safe water or sanitation worldwide.

If you had to give one piece of advice to someone just starting out in your field, what would it be?

Get involved in the community! Look for the greatest need and see how many ways you can help. A good business cannot be limited to its transactions. This can hold true in any industry. Be the people you want to see — that you want to work with in your city.

What does the word “community” mean to you?

Gosh, the way folks looked beyond themselves to lighten the load for others after Helene — that really spoke volumes to what community is. Being a part of, journeying with and being able to champion those needing a leg-up. All of the above feels like community — and we feel it in Asheville, big time.

Who are you excited to work with next?

We love Asheville; it is home for us. We dearly hope to get to know new businesses we have yet to serve. Hotels, affordable housing, senior living, breweries — any business using large quantities of water — we would love to get to know you and see how we can help!
