Happenings:

  • Malaprop’s Bookstore & Café is holding a drive-thru event with Jeff Kinney, the author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, on his Big Shot Drive-Thru Tour at the NC Arboretum on Tuesday, November 2 starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets start at $14.99. Each ticket admits one car to the drive-thru event and includes a signed copy of Big Shot (Diary of a Wimpy Kid #16). Entry will be staggered by ticket time. Find tickets and more information here.
  • The Magnetic Theatre has partnered with Speakeasy Improv to present a weekend of 1920s-themed fun on November 12 and 13 at 7:30 p.m. The first annual Speakeasy Soirée, a two-night event full of stand up, raffles, prizes, improv, and a costume competition. Friday night features stand-up comedy from Morgan Bost, improv duo Brothers Grimmprov, and an extended set starring a multitude of local improv teachers and performers. Saturday night will bring stand-up comedian Dan Garrett and improv troupe Now Are The Foxes, both from Charlotte, as well as an extended set from local improv group Reasonably Priced Babies.   • Asheville Community Theatre has a number of October events! On Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. at the ACT Mainstage, you can catch a performance of Based on the board game and cult classic film, Clue is a madcap comedy that will keep you guessing until the final twist. Tickets are $15-$26 and are available online here, by phone at 828-254-1320 or in person at the ACT box office. ACT is also holding a Pre-Halloween Costume sale on Saturday, October 23 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. This year’s sale includes vintage petticoats and bloomers, men’s dress and formal shirts, fur coats and accessories, hats, evening dresses, and children’s costumes. Men’s and women’s day wear and a variety of fabric pieces will also be available. Learn more here. Lastly, ACT is holding auditions for The Outsider on Tuesday, October 26 from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. on the Mainstage. The Outsider will be performed as reader’s theatre.   • Pisgah Legal Services seeks a full-time Grants Coordinator. Applicants should have experience in grant writing and reporting, non-profit programs, database management, and data analysis. Pisgah Legal is a growing organization with diverse funding, including more than 60 active government and foundation grants annually.   • Pisgah Legal Services seeks a Program Director/Site Coordinator for the Central-Southern Region. The program director will support the regional program capacity of the WNC Economic Recovery Program for Henderson, Polk, Rutherford, and Transylvania counties for a multi-year grant funded expansion of anti-poverty work within the broad areas of free tax preparation/tax credits and outreach/enrollment for Affordable Care Act health insurance. The WNC Economic Recovery Program is designed to have long-term impact through two main priorities: (1) reduce the child poverty rate in each WNC county and (2) increase the insured rate through quality, affordable health care coverage in each WNC county. The program will work in conjunction with the entire PLS legal aid staff to support expanding free legal assistance to help a growing number of very low-income people each year to solve problems related to basic needs, particularly housing, domestic violence, health care, and insufficient income.
