Happenings:

  • The  Policy Innovative Leaders of Tomorrow of UNC Asheville is holding a fundraiser on April 22 called The Change Gala in which students hope to sustainably equip the Food Equity Initiative, UNC Asheville’s permanent program, for the future of food security work at UNC Asheville. The  Policy Innovative Leaders of Tomorrow is a student-driven public policy team dedicated to instituting a long-term sustainable solution to food insecurity at UNC Asheville. Food insecurity is the state of being without reliable access to healthy and affordable food. In many cases for students, it takes the form of not eating during the day or skipping meals because they can’t afford the food on campus. . Learn more and RSVP here.
  • Montford Park Players has announced both their 50th Season and their upcoming production of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It. All performances will be held at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre at 92 Gay Street in the heart of Asheville’s historic Montford District, from May 6 through June 4 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:30 pm. In order to keep things safe in the wake of Covid, only those with tickets will be allowed at each performance. Tickets are available at montfordparkplayers.org and are, as always, FREE.
  • Asheville Community Theatre’s production of The Giver runs April 29- May 22, 2022, and is performed on the ACT Mainstage Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $15.00 – $26.00 and are available online at www.ashevilletheatre.org, by phone at 828-254-1320 or in person at the ACT box office. Learn more and buy tickets.
  • The Autumn Players at Asheville Community Theatre will hold auditions for The Heiress on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 from 10:30 am – 2:30 pm on the Mainstage. The Heiress will be performed as reader’s theatre. The director seeks 3 men and 6 women. No previous experience required to audition. All audition material is provided at the auditions.   • The Tanglewood Youth Theatre Production Classes of Asheville Community Theatre will present The Giver on May 13-22. All performances will be held on the ACT Mainstage. Tickets are $5.00 for children 17 and under and $10.00 for adults and are available online, by phone at 828-254-1320 or in person at the ACT Box Office. The High School Cast performances are Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 2:30 pm and Sunday, May 15, 2022 at 6:30 pm and the Middle School Cast performances are Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 2:30 pm and Sunday, May 22, 2022 at 6:30 pm. 

Impact: 

  • A new, in-depth economic impact analysis conducted in FY2019-20 found that A-B Tech Community College had a $405.8 million annual impact on the regional economy, supporting more than 7402 jobs, or one out of every 41 jobs, in the Western Gateway region. The impact of the increased earnings of A-B Tech alumni and the businesses they work for totaled $340.1 million, while A-B Tech operations spending contributed $53.5 million and student spending contributed $12.2 million. The study looked at a five-county impact area comprised of Buncombe, Madison, McDowell, Haywood, and Henderson counties. The report assessed the economic impact of five key A-B Tech programs on the area economy, the return on investment for students, and the benefits generated for N.C. taxpayers. The high-demand career pathways quantified in the report include jobs and programs related to Allied Health, Business & Information Technology (IT), Engineering Technology, Nursing, and Public Safety.
