  • Two nursing students in Mars Hill University’s Judge-McRae School of Nursing will spend the summer learning from and working with nurses at Veterans Administration facilities in the area. Michaela Baker of Arden, NC, and William Brawley of Morganton, NC, were selected for the VALOR Program, which stands for VA Learning Opportunities Residency, at the Western North Carolina VA Health Care System. The program gives rising seniors in nursing schools the opportunity to work as residents in a clinical setting at a Veterans Administration medical facility.   • Rouleau Real Estate Group is hosting a free, virtual concert today, April 20 on Facebook Live from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature the music of Mad Mike Martinez and Friends. To learn more or view the livestream, click here. 
  • Gardner-Webb University is holding two days worth of in-person commencement services for the Class of 2021 on May 7 and 8. The ceremony on Friday, May 7 will include a guest speaker, congratulatory acknowledgements for graduates, a tassel turning ceremony and fireworks. On Saturday, may 8, a series of Recognition and Celebration events is planned for the University’s schools and colleges.   • Montford Park Players will present a production of William Shakespeare’s A Comedy of Errors May 7-May 22 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. at the Hazel Robinson Ampitheater (92 Gay Street). Health protocols, including 50 percent capacity, social distances and masks, will be in place. Tickets are free, but required to attend a performance. Buy tickets here. 
  • Yoga Nut is hosting an Outdoor Yoga + Wellness event on Saturday, May 22 from 9 a.m. to noon at Asheville Salt Cave’s Lawn (16 N. Liberty St.). Ticket includes 60 minute Yoga at 9:15 a.m. or 10:45 a.m. with live music between sessions. Gifts and couples from local wellness businesses will be available.   • Nerds to Go Asheville is hosting an e-waste program starting on Earth Day (Thursday, April 22). Seventy percent of e-waste is toxic, so locals can take computer equipment they want to throw out, including all-in-one computers, cables/connectors, ink/toner cartridges and more, to 900 Hendersonville Rd.   • Asheville Wellness Tours is hosting a Forest Bathing: ‘Sunday Brunch’ Edition on Sunday, May 2 from 11 to 2 p.m. Led by Certified Forest Bathing Guide Dr. Mattie Decker, the group will meet somewhere in the Hickory Nut Gorge (the exact location has yet to be disclosed) and the cost is $35 with the option to increase the donation.   • Explore Asheville Convention and Visitors Bureau has announced the appointment of Asheville native Marshall Hilliard as the organization’s new vice president of sales. Hilliard, who has experience in hospitality sales and marketing spanning nearly three decades, has previously held leadership positions with major hotel brands like Hilton and Westin in major cities across the United States. Most recently, Hilliard served as area director of sales and marketing for Windsor Hospitality’s Marriott brands. He succeeds Dianna Pierce who retired in March after 26 years with Explore Asheville


  • The Southern Loft, an NC-based boutique, will open in May at the Asheville Outlets. The boutique offers a variety of women’s fashions, home items and gifts at an affordable price point. “We are pleased to welcome The Southern Loft to Asheville Outlets.   • Hilltop Holdings has an opening for Mortgage Loan Office Support at its Asheville location. The individual, under the direction of the Loan Officer or group of loan officers, will act as a liaison between the loan officer, in-process customers and branch staff.
