  • Champion Credit Union was recently named as one of the 2021 Best Employers in North Carolina for its fourth year in a row. The program, created by Business North Carolina and Best Companies Group, identifies, recognizes, and honors the best employers in North Carolina who are benefiting the economy, workforce, and businesses in the state of North Carolina. The list is made up of fifty-six companies. Of the fifty-six, Champion Credit Union, Johnson Price Sprinkle PA, Zoe Dental, Pine Gate Renewables and Gia Herbs were the WNC-based companies to be named.   • AdventHealth Hendersonville has announced the newest recipient of its Sunshine Award is Danny Sherrill, RCP, RRT, part of the AdventHealth Hendersonville Respiratory Services team. AdventHealth Nursing Leadership created the Sunshine Award to recognize ancillary team members who strive for excellence in their profession, consistently deliver exceptional care, uphold the highest standards and collaborate with the AdventHealth nursing teams to enhance the experience of our patients, family members and guests while Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ.   • Mountain Area Workforce Development Board will be holding a ‘$17 per Hour and Beyond’ job fair on Tuesday, June 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the WNC Agriculture Center at the Virginia Boone Building in Fletcher. Participating employers are required to offer at least one position paying $17/hr. or more, with most participating employers offering multiple positions paying $17/hr. or more. 
  • The Center for Craft is holding a three day craft research program entitled “Craft Ways 2021: Tending to Craft” July 22-24. With the purchase of a Craft Ways 2021 ticket, you get to participate in three days of live programming, workshops, and discussion groups, access recordings of select symposium programs and pre-recorded content through the end of December 2021, unwind with fellow attendees in evening social events and more!   • Montford Park Players is presenting a production of the World Premiere of the locally-written Grimm’s Fairy Tales. All performances will be held at the Hazel Robinson Amphitheatre at 92 Gay Street in Asheville’s Montford District, from June 25-July 31 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. As per Governor Cooper’s current dictates, Montford Park Players will keep its audiences at 50% capacity, distanced and masked as appropriate. In order to keep it safe, only those with tickets will be allowed at each performance. Tickets are free and available here.
  • At their regular meeting on May 4, the Buncombe County Board Commissioners voted to make Juneteenth an official holiday, joining communities across the country to recognize the importance of celebrating this important day. Pack Memorial Library and Buncombe County Special Collections (BCSC) will host a variety of events in honor of Juneteenth and looks forward to celebrating this important holiday. On Tuesday, June 15, from 5-7 p.m. the public is invited to a community celebration at the lower level of Pack Memorial Library. There will be indoor and outdoor activities and opportunities for community members of all ages, including community art and archiving activities, opportunities to view historical documents related to enslavement and emancipation held in the Buncombe County Special Collections, opportunity to contribute to a community time capsule and storytelling, music, and light refreshments.
