Award:

  • The Irene Wortham Center has been awarded $5,000 through the Prestige Subaru’s Drive for a Difference Community Initiative. Irene Wortham’s Early Learning Center (ELC) will use the money to purchase materials that will help children hit developmental benchmarks needed to enter kindergarten on time, ready to learn. The money will supply the classrooms with materials needed to teach STEM, math, science and dramatic play, including multicultural dress up clothes and ingredients to teach kids the different culinary dishes from around the world.   • AdventHealth Hendersonville has announced their newest DAISY Award winner. Alyssa Corn, BSN, RN works in the Medical/Surgical Department at AdventHealth Hendersonville.. A recent patient of Alyssa’s nominated her for the DAISY Award because he was very impressed with the compassionate care he received from Alyssa. He had come to AdventHealth Hendersonville for a blood transfusion, and he was moved to the Medical/Surgical floor where Alyssa became his nurse. In his nomination he shares, Alyssa was very knowledgeable and professional. She explained everything she was doing and answered any questions he or his wife had. She even made him smile and laugh with her sense of humor. The DAISY Award was created by the family of J. Patrick Barnes in 1999 to thank the nurses who cared for Patrick and for them as he battled an autoimmune disease. Happenings:

  • The Montford North Star Academy is hosting their annual Fall Mum and Pumpkin sale on Saturday, October 1st from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. This year’s event is going to be bigger than ever, with MNSA getting their bounty from First Step Farms.
  • Fjällräven,  an outdoor company that makes sustainable, durable clothing and outdoor gear, has opened a store in Asheville, NC at 3 Kitchin Place. The company is dedicated to sustainability, employee well-being, and doing good in the communities where our stores are located. They are having a Grand Opening on Saturday Oct. 1st from 10:00 am – 7:00 pm where they will be giving out 50 hats to the first 50 people! In addition, the entire store will be 20% off for the day (exceptions apply). There will be a Guide presentation at 10:00 am, teaching outdoor skills. Learn more about Fjallraven. 
  • The North Carolina Stage Company will present The Roommate, an unexpected comedy by Jen Silverman, from October 5- 30, 2022 at 15 Stage Lane in downtown Asheville.Sharon is a divorced Iowa housewife in her mid-fifties. Robyn, also in her mid-fifties, is a vegan lesbian from the Bronx. Sharon needs a roommate to share her Iowa home. Robyn needs a place to hide and a chance to start over. But as Sharon begins to uncover Robyn’s secrets, they encourage her own deep-seated desire to transform her life completely.   • The Adventure Center of Asheville is hosting their 10th Annual Haunted Trail presented by Mellow Mushroom on October 7-8, 14-15, 21-23, 27-30.  It is a family-friendly Halloween festival (geared towards families with kids ages 3-12) with an outdoor spooky trail with epic Halloween Scenes, actors and spectacular lights, sounds and props. The Center will also light up their Treetops Park as an aerial Glow Trail.  There is also Pirate Cove with a 30-foot Pirate Ship and mermaids and a large festival area with tricks and treats (Mellow Mushroom Pizza, local beer, hot cholate, smores), life-sized games, balloon art, face painting, etc. Learn more.
  • The 2022 Celebration on the Court in the Wilma M. Sherrill Center is returning on Thursday, October 20th at 6:00 p.m. This year’s guest speaker will be Hall of Fame Coach Bobby Cremins who will be joined by Hall of Fame Basketball Analyst Debbie Antonelli, who will again serve as the event’s emcee. Opportunities to support this year’s event include being a table sponsor where seven guests will be joined by a Bulldog student-athlete or coach. If you are not interested in a table sponsorship, they also have the option to purchase individual tickets. All dollars raised from this basketball kickoff event support the Bulldog Student-Athlete Scholarship Fund.

  • AdventHealth has welcomed Douglas Thompson, MD as its new Medical Director for Hematology and Oncology. Dr. Thompson is board-certified in Hematology and Oncology and focuses on providing compassionate, patient-centered care. Along with leading the Cancer Services program across four locations in Western North Carolina, Dr. Thompson is welcoming new patients at AdventHealth Hematology Oncology Infusion Services Hendersonville. Dr. Thompson earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC and his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA. He went on to complete his residency in Internal Medicine from Emory University and his Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology from Brody School of Medicine East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. Dr. Thompson will be caring for patients at AdventHealth Hematology Oncology Infusion Services Hendersonville. He is welcoming new patients.
