The Innovative Educator program was created in 2005 by the Partners in Education Advisory Committee of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, which includes representatives from Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County Schools, Madison County Schools, and Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. Twenty-one educators have been recognized since 2005 for their job-readiness programs.

The recognition program is made possible through the sponsorship of Chamber member businesses and institutions. The 2010 recognition program is sponsored by AAA Vacations, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, FASTSIGNS, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, and the University of North Carolina Asheville.

The Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit organization with more than 2,000 members representing 86,000 employees.
