AVL 5×5 Job Plan Builds on City’s Innovation Platform

Fifty new “high-growth” companies headquartered in Asheville is part of the community's next 5-year strategy called AVL 5×5: Vision 2020. A public-private initiative, AVL 5×5 aims to create 3,000 new direct jobs that pay an average annual wage of $50,000.

Leveraging "Asheville’s high quality of life" will enable the city to recruit talent, companies – and research institutions, not just from the U.S. but from around the world, said Bruce Katz, an urban-policy expert at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. “The biggest dynamics in the U.S. (urban planning) are markets with vitality, vibrancy and authenticity,” he explained. “Asheville’s got that in spades.”

“Every city is trying to build an Asheville,” Katz added.
