BORGWARNER TURBO SYSTEMS’ EXPANSION CREATES NEW MANUFACTURING JOBS, INVESTS IN FUEL-SAVING AUTO TECHNOLOGY IN SOUTH ASHEVILLE

Asheville, N.C. – In cooperation with the Economic Development Coalition (EDC) for Asheville-Buncombe County, BorgWarner, a global technology leader and top automotive industry supplier, announced today a plan to expand its Turbo Systems manufacturing facility in Arden, North Carolina. The expansion will create 154 new good-paying engineering and manufacturing jobs in Buncombe County and will invest $55 million in facilities and equipment over the next five years.

The BorgWarner Turbo Systems facility in Arden opened in 1977 and currently employs over 650 full-time employees. Stringent emissions regulations and increasing demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles are driving significant growth in turbocharger production, which is expected to more than double in North American in the next five years. Engineered to improve fuel economy, emissions and performance, BorgWarner’s leading turbocharging systems boost a wide range of vehicles from commercial trucks and off-highway equipment to high-performance race cars. In fact, every car in the Verizon IndyCar® Series is equipped with a BorgWarner EFR (engineered for racing) turbocharger.

“As demand for our world-leading turbocharging technologies escalates, BorgWarner will continue to leverage the strong and talented local labor pool,” said Frédéric Lissalde, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Turbo Systems. “We are excited about our business prospects and look forward to working with North Carolina and Buncombe County to enhance the local economy.”

“It’s the great companies based in Buncombe County like BorgWarner, utilizing our highly skilled workforce, that keep our region on the leading-edge of manufacturing technologies,” said David Gantt, Chairman of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners.

“Buncombe County’s sustainability ethic and strength in advanced manufacturing create huge opportunities for job and wage growth. Our workforce is committed to, and clever at implementing, new valuable technologies. BorgWarner is among our area’s most innovative manufacturers leading the world in research and development. The EDC is grateful for Buncombe County’s continuing support for the creation of high-quality jobs like those at this great local employer,” said EDC Chairman Paul Szurek.
