At this year’s Chamber Challenge 5k, we were proud to present the 2025 Good Health Good Business Award to an organization that exemplifies what it means to care – for its staff and our community. Western Carolina Medical Society (WCMS) has gone above and beyond this past year, demonstrating that small teams can make a massive impact.
Sponsored by Mission Health and selected by a panel including Eaton and Givens Communities, this award honors a business that prioritizes wellness inside and out. WCMS stood out not only for its support of employee wellbeing, like gym membership reimbursements and regular therapy sessions, but also for its deep and lasting impact across Western North Carolina.
Through its flagship Project Access program, WCMS coordinated $400,000 in donated specialty care in 2024 alone, helping nearly 1,500 uninsured individuals get the treatment they need. Their WIN interpreter program facilitated nearly 7,000 appointments in more than 38 languages, ensuring patients can understand and advocate for their own health.
And they didn’t stop there. Through its Healthy Healer initiative, WCMS provided therapy and coaching sessions for healthcare providers, donated gas cards to help patients get to appointments, and responded to Hurricane Helene with critical relief, from replacing durable medical equipment to covering rent and prescriptions for those impacted.
With only 6–15 staff members, this organization has maintained and expanded vital programs, continuing to champion health equity for thousands across our region. Congratulations to the Western Carolina Medical Society on this well-deserved recognition!
