AMOS announces fall science pub speaker line-up

September 5, 2017

Free AMOS science lecture series continues as the museum partners with The Collider to host speakers ranging from climate science to the science of wine, and everything in between.

The Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) announces the fall line-up of the museum’s Science Pub series, a free monthly science event. Hosted at The Collider, the Fall 2017 line-up includes speakers from NCEI, The American Chestnut Foundation, UNC Asheville, and the Sustainable Appalachian Viticulture Institute. Science Pubs are once a month on a Friday and take place at The Collider in downtown Asheville, on the top floor of the Wells Fargo building at 1 Haywood St. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for lite bites provided by Ingles Markets, and beverages provided by Asheville Brewing Alliance; the program begins at 6:30p.m.

AMOS will kick-off the fall Science Pub series on September 15th with Deke Arndt, Chief of the Monitoring Branch for NCEI. He will present Pulse of the Planet- Monitoring the Climate. Deke will delve into his branch’s role in monitoring and analyzing our planet’s climate systems and what analysis of this data is telling us about our changing climate.

This is the fourth year AMOS has collaborated with local scientists and breweries to present the Science Pub series. The Collider, an innovation center for climate solutions, is partnering with the museum to co-host the 2017 series. The two nonprofit organizations are located in the same building; AMOS on the ground floor at 43 Patton Ave., and The Collider on the top floor, overlooking Pritchard Park. “Science Pubs provide the community an accessible way to learn and engage with science happening in our very own backyard. We are grateful to our partners, The Collider, Asheville Brewing Alliance, and Ingles Markets for participating in this series, allowing us to provide a free night of science to the community each month,” says Anna Priest, Executive Director of AMOS.

The museum encourages folks to mark their calendars for an excellent fall Science Pub line-up. On October 20th, Jared Westbrook of The American Chestnut Foundation presents, Saving the American Chestnut- Introducing Disease Resistance to One of America’s Most Beloved Trees. The following month, on November 17th, AMOS hosts Megan R. Underhill Ph.D. and Professor of Sociology at UNC Asheville, as she delves into the sociology behind racism. Chuck Blethen, Executive Director at the Sustainable Appalachian Viticulture Institute, will complete the fall Science Pub line-up with a presentation on the science of wine on December 15th.
