April 22 & 23 (10am – 6pm) & April 24 (11am – 5pm)
On April 22 – 24, Grovewood Gallery in Asheville will host a benefit for The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design (CCCD), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the field of craft through fostering new ideas, funding craft scholarship, and backing the next generation of makers, curators and critics. During the benefit, visitors will be able to save 10% on all ceramic art, enter a free raffle for a Made in WNC prize pack, and enjoy an artist demonstration by Brent Skidmore. 10% of sales from this 3 day event will go towards supporting free public programming at Benchspace Gallery & Workshop, CCCD’s exhibition space in downtown Asheville.
CCCD recently announced its participation in WantedDesign Brooklyn May 7-17, 2016 during NYCxDESIGN, New York City’s official annual citywide celebration of design. CCCD will display Made in Western North Carolina (WNC), an exhibition featuring work by twenty-four regional textile, ceramic, and furniture studios, presented by the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority.
CCCD will be hosting a free raffle at Grovewood Gallery for a Made in WNC prize pack featuring a 64-page color exhibition catalogue, Made in WNC tote bag made in Asheville by social enterprise Block by Block Industries, and a handmade mug from East Fork Pottery, one of the featured studios in the exhibition.
Asheville artist Brent Skidmore will be demonstrating some of his carving and textural surfaces on a mirror frame and boulder forms on Friday during the benefit from 12 – 4pm. Brent serves as Assistant Professor of Art and Director of Craft Studies at UNC Asheville and is a former board member of the CCCD (2007 – 2015). He has taught at many esteemed craft schools across the country, including Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Arrowmont School of Arts, and Penland School of Crafts. His work and processes are included in a recent Lark Publication entitled “The Penland Book of Woodworking.” Exhibitions of Brent’s personal work have included the Smithsonian Craft Show and SOFA-Chicago.
