This Week’s Business Buzz: 8/9/19

August 14, 2019

Watch out folks, Buncombe County has issued a warning about a public-records related scam going around. In other news, students from four WNC counties will now receive a 50% discount on tuition at Mars Hill University. And Pardee UNC Health Care has received an achievement award from the American College of Cardiology.

Achievement

  • Merchants in Historic Biltmore Village announced today that 30 businesses there have officially transitioned to a “no plastic bags” operation, making them the first merchant group in the city to embrace a sweeping voluntary plastic bag ban. The seeds of this sustainable transition were planted in fall 2018, when Asheville GreenWorks sent a call to locals to join a Plastic Reduction Task Force. Nearly a dozen volunteers stepped forward and developed an action plan to help merchants operating in Biltmore Village move toward a Voluntary Plastic Bag Ban.
  • Pardee UNC Health Care has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain  ̶ MI Registry Silver Performance Achievement Award for 2019. Pardee is one of only 86 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor. The award recognizes Pardee’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that Pardee has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

Announcement

  • The Buncombe County Register of Deeds wants to make sure the public does not overpay for documents that are readily available for free or at-cost. Currently, a California-based company is taking advantage of open records laws to obtain names and addresses of people who have recently purchased property. The company then sends a letter that deceptively looks like a bill in exchange for records related to the property transfer. County Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger says it seems the elderly are being intentionally targeted.

Funding

  • Students from four Western North Carolina counties get a 50 percent discount on tuition at Mars Hill University, thanks to a new scholarship program. The Local Lion Promise guarantees scholarships covering at least half the price of tuition for students from Buncombe, Madison, Mitchell, and Yancey counties. For the 2019-2020 academic year the scholarship amount is $14,975 per year. Students who are interested in applying should contact the MHU admissions office at 866-642-4968 or admissions@mhu.edu.
